Chico State Police Search for Arson Suspect

Chico State University (CSU) Police are investigating an arson incident that happened near campus According to officials at roughly noon Saturday , CSU Police responded near the south side of the Wildcat Recreation Center (WREC). Officials say a male suspect set fire to debris lodged between a PG&E utility pole and its metal brace. The fire was extinguished before it could cause any major damage. The University Police Department (UPD) asks anyone has information about the suspect to call (530) 898-5555.

Lake Oroville Control Burn

A control burn will take place Monday through Wednesday at the Loafer Creek Recreation Area of Lake Oroville, a cooperative effort between CAL FIRE, the Department of Water Resources, and California State Parks. This project contributes to the goal in California of treating 100,000 acres annually as part of the state's Vegetation Management Program. Smoke will be visible thru Wednesday

Chico Man Arrested on Felony DUI Charge

The CHP reports that a Chico man is suspected of driving under the influence causing a multi vehicle accident that killed 1 driver. Tuesday afternon on Hiway 99 North of Chico .Officials say 43-year-old Andre Tucker of Chico was driving a 1997 Ford Expedition at a high rate of speed, southbound on Highway 99. He lost control of his vehicle and crossed into the northbound lane and crashed into a 2015 Honda Accord driven by 56-year-old Mima Rodriguez of Gerber.The Ford then traveled out of control and crashed head-on into a 2012 Toyota Prius traveling northbound on the highway. The driver of the Prius a 22 yr old Female from Chico was killed in the accident . Tucker was arrested and booked into Tehama county jail.

Oroville delays Decision on Fireworks Sales

A decision on continuing or discontinuing the sale of Safe 'n Sane fireworks in the city of Oroville has been put on hold until the first Oroville City Council meeting of December. City Officials say they will continue to study the issue to discuss at the December Council meeting .. The meeting held Tuesday included a special discussion on the future of fireworks use within Oroville city limits and to address if the sale of Safe 'n Sane fireworks should continue in Oroville.

PGE warns of possible PSPS event due to Fire Danger

Pacific Gas and Electric says that due to elevated fire risks, they are preparing for possible Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS) later this week. The Utility says they are actively monitoring weather conditions in thirty different California counties for a possible PSPS to help prevent wildfires by actively shutting off power to areas at high risk for fires. Incuding Butte Shasta Glenn Colusa Tehama and Shasta Counties.

Cal Fire rescues injured hiker West Branch Feather River

CAL FIRE Butte Unit say crews were able to locate and rescue a person who fell down into a ravine along the West Branch of the Feather River north of Stirling City Thursday night. CAL FIRE says that the victim suffered moderate injuries from falling into the ravine and was transported by ground ambulance to Enloe Health.

Former Student Sues Gridley Unified

The Gridley Unified School District is now at the heart of a lawsuit which alleges that school officials failed to protect an eighth grade student from being groomed and sexually abused by his teacher. The lawsuit follows the criminal case and subsequent sentencing of the Gridley teacher, 46 year-old Michelle Solis, who is now serving the maximum sentence of four years instate prison for having sex with her 14 year-old male student. he suit, filed this week in Butte County Superior Court, claims school had enough knowledge of Solis' activities with the student, referred to as John Doe in court documents, but still failed to intervene during the 2020-21 school year.

Yankee Hill Man Sentenced for Arson

A Yankee Hill man was sentenced in Butte County Superior Court today to two years in state prison after he set his taxicab and a patch of vegetation on fire in the rural and brush-covered area between Yankee Hill and Concow this summer. Douglas Rowell was arrested by CAL FIRE arson investigators last July at a makeshift RV campsite behind the old Rock House near the intersection of Highway 70 and Timtam Lane. He later admitted his guilt in court,

2 injured in Helicopter Crash in Chico

The Butte County Sheriff's Office reports a helicopter crash on the 800 block of El Monte Avenue in Chico Monday Afternoon the two occupants of the helicopter were transported to Enloe with Major injuries Officials from the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration have been contacted to take over the investigation into the crash.The Butte County Sheriff's Office said that the helicopter was privately owned.

Former Paradise Mayor and longtime Council member Jody Jones unexpectedly passed away this  past weekend...Jones served as the Town Mayor thru the Camp Fire and started leading the recovery and rebuild efforts...she was 68

Gov Signs Food Safety Bill

Governor Gavin Newsom has signed a new law that prohibits food labels like "sell by" or "best before." The labels can be confusing because in California there is no universal meaning for the labels under current laws. The state wants to make it easier for people to know when their food is still good to eat. The law is the first of its kind and aims to reduce food waste and the Golden State's impact on the environment.

Gov Newsome Celebrates Klamath River Dam Work

Governor Newsom is celebrating a "monumental achievement." The historic work to remove four dams from the Klamath River is done and water is flowing freely. Crews finished ahead of schedule in Siskiyou County near the Oregon border. Newsom says this gives salmon and other species a chance to thrive once again, while also restoring an essential lifeline for tribal communities. It will still take several years though restore the 22-hundred acres of formerly submerged land.

Man Charged with Arson at Pallet Shelter enters plea

The man charged with felony arson at the Pallete Shelter that destroyed 2 of teh shelters was in Court Wednesday. Zachary Fitch charged with a felony count of intentional arson of inhabited residence. He waived the hearing and admitted his crime by pleading no contest. Butte County DA Mike Ramsey says Fitch faces life in prison ...he will back in Court November 6th for sentencing.

Thompson Fire Suspect in Court

The Man accused of sparking the Thompson Fire in Oroville this summer pled not guilty in a Butte County courtroom Wednesday, Oct. 2. Prosecutors say Spencer Anderson, threw a lit firework out of his car that sparked the fire that caused millions in damage. Andersons Attorney says he's considering a change of venue, raising concerns about potential impartiality among Butte County jurors. He is due back in court on Nov. 12

Oroville Council Approves Measure H

Butte County voters will have an opportunity to vote on a one-cent sales tax, otherwise known as Measure H. Oroville city councilors are set to vote on a letter of support for that measure in their meeting Tuesday.County officials say the measure would generate $44 million annually, which will be spent on things like law enforcement, fire services and the County Library.

Red Bluff Murder Suspect enters Plea

Tehama County District Attorney's Office reports 19-year-old Nathan Reep pleaded not guilty to the first-degree murder of 16-year-old Domingo "Dominic" Carrillo, . This stems from an incident on September 13, where Carrillo was murdered in front of his home in Red Bluff. Tehama Co DA says that suspect 16 yr old 16-year-old Ryan Piper's case will remain in juvenile court based on a state law that prohibits the district attorney's office from trying to elevate his case into adult court. One other suspect a 17 yr old is also still in Juvenile court and there is limited information on the case. Reep's preliminary court date is set for December 3.

State Assembly Passes Newsome Gas Bill

A plan to stop California gas prices from spiking is headed to the Senate. The Assembly approved Governor Newsom's proposal in the Special Session yesterday. He wants refineries to keep a specific amount of fuel on hand to avoid a supply shortage if they go down for maintenance or experience an outage. He says many families were forced to make tough decisions last year like choosing between filling up or putting food on the table.
